With 13th KAN’s Edition is time for changes in the structure of the festival. Most of all, there is no longer division into Foreign Movies Competition and Polish Movies Competition. Thanks to that modification, native creators without any privileges are going to compete with international competition. Moreover, there is no longer evaluation of submitted works in three categories: feature films, animated films and documentaries.
But instead of these changes, occured proposition dividing into two competitions: Amateur and Independent Films and School Films. During previous edition there was a problem that caused many discussion, what do exactly listed in KAN’s name “amateur” and “independent” mean? This time, to avoid misunderstandings, these both definitions are contained in the festival's regulations.
“Amateur Film is a film realized in any given technique outside of the professional distribution without the support and oversight of a producer, the income from which is made solely by the production team.
Independent Film is a film realized in any given technique and being the director’s artistic expression, realized for artistic and not commercial purposes, without any significant financial support.”
Clarification of these categories and highlighting their features and financial relationships allows for better films selections, and also it’s better for viewers, because we want them to see productions first of all good, and secondly productions truly made without professional system which has got a lot of money. Also, young directors from around the world are going to compete in The School Film Competition, to which are admitted all students of film schools and their graduates benefiting from special support programs organized by their universities.
Thanks to separation of work arising from professional institutions and amateur films, allows the latter for more equal competition in their midst. While students will be able to deal with representatives of foreign universities with a similar technical and financial support.
Last year during the KAN, total of 16 prizes were given. During the 13th edition number of handed over KANewkas is going to be reduced, which will has positive effect for awarded prizes prestige.
