XI Amateur and Independent Cinema Festival KAN 2010
21 - 25 April 2010, Wrocław
It seems like the 10th edition of KAN ended just yesterday, and yet the preparations for the 11th KAN are already in progress.
We have already started a new series of KAN Special Screenings, so keep checking for new information not to miss anything! Also, New Regulations of Polish Films Competition and Foreign Films Competition are available here.
Amateur and Independet Cinema Festival KAN, after over ten years of its existence is now one of the biggest film events in Poland. Every year, during those few days of the Festival's Finals, we gather fans, authors, and experts of film art in the Festival's cinema, and treat them to a feast for the eyes--a selection of the best of independent cinema.
KAN's main goal is to promote independent film art and independent film artists--people, who in a couple of years will be the pillars of the contemporary Polish and world cinematography. That is why KAN is not just the 5 days of the Finals. It is a Festival which lasts the whole year--thanks to Special Screenings which are held in different places in Poland, Europe, and in the whole World.
KAN reaches its climax during Polish Film Competition. Each year, 200 to 300 films of varying length and theme are submitted. After thorough scrutiny, KAN's Program Committee leaves around 10h of the best productions, which the audience is presented during the Finals. For a few years now, Foreign Film Competition is also a part of the KAN Program.
Before 2008, films competed in three categories: feature film and documentary. As of 2009, a third category is also included--animated film. The prizes are: Golden, Silver and Brown KANewka's, awarded by the Jury. In addition, the films compete for the Jury's Special KANewka, Audience KANewka, and Journalist's KANewka.
One of the most important--and always impatiently awaited--elements of the Festival is the Public Jury Session. The invited film connoisseurs presiding in the jury, discuss the films and nominate their favorites while the audience--and the artists too--observe and impatiently await the verdict, which, for the sake of suspense, is disclosed only during the Festival Gala.
